Phonics & Reading

Phonics

All Year One children in England have to take a Phonics screening test in June.  As a school we use ‘Letters and Sounds’ to teach phonics to your children each day. The session takes 20 to 25 minutes and aims to teach your child how to read and write new sounds.

We will be running a number of phonics information sessions where you will have the opportunity to take part in phonics sessions and activities.

However, if you want to help your child at home before these sessions the following websites give some excellent games and resources that you can play with your child.reading-display

If your child doesn’t pass their phonics screening check then they will have an opportunity to re-take the test in Year Two. If your child is in Year Two and you are unsure whether or not they passed last year please speak to one of the Year Two teachers. This information is also in your child’s end of year report.

Reading

Children are taught to read using a graded system of books that incorporates a range of reading schemes and ‘real’ books.reading-record
